Orlando’s rockstar gaming community headed to GDC 2016

Metro Orlando’s video-game professionals have their eyes set on one of the largest industry conferences in the U.S., in an effort to grow the community here.

Officials with Indienomicon, a group of independent video-game developers, have spearheaded an effort to get representation to the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.

The group hopes to raise $75,000 in cash and in-kind donations — such as booth or display material — to attend the show March 14 through 18.

Kunal Patel, one of the leaders of Indienomicon, said the effort has so far yielded financial contributions from several small video-game companies in the area.

“This is the industry event,” said Patel, who estimated that up to four out of five deals between agents, publishing houses and other gaming agencies either get signed at the show or originate there. “As a city, we often tout our gaming, digital media and gaming education programs. But why are we not there?”

Central Florida is home to a vibrant video-game community, buoyed in part by game design programs at University of Central Florida and Full Sail University.
